Soul Sacrifice Redux: 40 Years Later

by Larry on August 18, 2009

Forty years after his historic Woodstock drum solo, Michael Shrieve played “Soul Sacrifice” at Tost tonight, wowing a standing-room-only crowd.  Here’s a video of the first nine minutes or so, going up through his drum solo. That’s JC Johnny Conga playing congas. The lighting was bad where he was (off stage off to the side), so I didn’t get any video of him, but, man, those congas really make this song. And, yes, that is a Hammond B3.

And here’s the rest of the song (sorry about breaking it in two, but YouTube has a ten-minute time limit on videos):

There were, of course, a lot of musicians in the crowd. I chatted outside afterward with world-beat bass player Lennox Holness and another musician named Michael. Among other things we talked about how tough it is to make a living in Seattle as a musician and the closely related phenomenon of people sort of appreciating music but not being willing to pay for it. This lead to a very fun riff on how those cheap bastards can kiss our respective butts. But, seriously, that’s a subject for future discussion here.

I was lame and didn’t stay for the second set. I wanted to get home and get these videos uploaded.
