African Dance Classes and Teachers

Seattle is blessed with a host of fantastic African dance teachers. You can literally take a dance class every day of the week. We also get regular visits from touring teachers. Here is the current list of African dance teachers in Seattle.

If you know of teachers who should be listed on this page, please let me know.

I no longer list classes by day and time. The following is a list of African dance teachers who regularly or occasionally offer classes in Seattle. Please consult their website or call or e-mail the instructor for information on class dates and times.

Hi Larry! How are you? Just wanted to let you know that Sawe isn’t teaching any longer on Tuesdays. But Fama N’Diaye teaches Senegalese Sabar Dance at Every Body’s Fitness – 2609 S Jackson on Tuesdays from 6:15-8:00. Mapathe and crew provide the drumming. Her class is great.

I have a question. Are drop-ins welcome for the dance classes? What are the fees?

Hi Larry! Fama is taking a break for Ramadan.

Thanks, Stephanie. I just got an e-mail from Gora about this, too. Hoping folks see these comments until I have time to update the calendar.

Hello
My name is Mona Khanuja and I am part of the cultural commitee that plans an annual event at our school-Open Window/Vista Academy in Bellevue. We are planning on focusing on the continent of Africa for our annual cultural program this Jan 22nd 2011. This program is an event for the school families to come together and learn about countries and their culture. I would appreciate if I can get in touch with some performers who would like to perform for the kids and show their talents or some people who have traditional coustumes from the different countries of Africa. We are very excited to put together this program but need a lot of help as this is a new for us.

I thank you in advance for any help the we can get.

Mona

I am so sorry I missed Manimou Camara in Chicago. I just came across this site and I saw her name. I drive 2 hours to get to Chicago to take African dance classes, but missed out this time.
Next time
Tammy

Question: I have reviewed your dance classes (that I ‘m interested within) and I discovered that the classes are not listed on the dance studio’ website. For example: the dance class titled: “Zimbabwe Dance” taught by Lora Chiorah-Dye – this dance class is not listed on Velocity’s website. So, should I still arrive to the Velocity studio at the time listed. Note: Lora has two times listed for Sunday, Novemeber 28, 2010. Will be teaching twice on today?

I would love to receive feedback.

Thanks,
Ms. Pitts,

Tried to go to the West African dance 10:30 am today at Seattle Center. No sign at all of the class, and the 5pm class wasn’t on the schedule there either. Any way to check if the classes are current before we go?

@Ms. Pitts and @Noelle:
My apologies for the errors and omissions on the site. The page is now updated with current info. As I now mention above, it is always a good idea (even when this page is up to date) to double-check with the teacher before going to a class. Changes and cancellations are common. I try to list them here, but a lot of changes slip by.
Cheers,
Larry
