The Pacific Jazz Institute at Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley welcomes the Poncho Sanchez Latin Jazz Band for three nights and five shows. Band members: Poncho Sanchez (Congas/Vocals), Joey De Leon (Timbales), Rene Camacho (Bass), Ron Blake (Trumpet), Robert Hardt (Alto and Tenor Saxophone), Francisco Torres (Trombone), Jose Rodriguez (Bongos) and Andy Langham (Piano). Set time Wednesday at 7:30pm and Thursday & Friday 7:30pm and 9:30pm. Doors open at 6:00pm Wednesday and 5:30pm Thursday and Friday.

For more than three decades as both a leader and a sideman, conguero Poncho Sanchez has stirred up a fiery stew of straightahead jazz, gritty soul music, and infectious melodies and rhythms from a variety of Latin American and South American sources. His influences are numerous, but among the more prominent figures that inform his music are two of the primary architects of Latin jazz – conga drummer and composer Chano Pozo and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie.

Composer and multi-instrumentalist Taj Mahal, a two-time Grammy winner and one of the most influential American blues and roots artists of the past half-century, celebrates four decades of blues, roots, reggae and beyond with his latest release Maestro (Heads Up). “With this record, as with all my records, I want people to roll back the rug and go for it” says Taj. “This record is just the beginning of another chapter, one that’s going to be open to more music and more ideas. Even at the end of forty years, in many ways my music is just getting started.”

Eduardo Mendonça, Brazilian recording artist, vocalist, composer, percussionist, guitarist, and musical arranger, was born in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. Mendonça traces his lineage to a royal African family bearing the hereditary title of Mamabeka (“prophet of the royal court”). His grandfather, who secretly maintained the Mambeka title, is pictured in a rare book, property of the Instituto Geográfico e Histórico da Bahia (Geographic and Historical Institute of Bahia).

Mendonça performed as featured musician in many venues in Bahia – Brazil, including command performances for Brazilian President João Baptista Figueiredo and for Pope John Paul II. Eduardo had the honor to play for the former South Africa President Nelson Mandela (Seattle, WA – USA – 1999). He also performed in trios elétricos—brightly lit mobile soundstages for festivals and public dancing in Brazil —with trios such as Dengo da Bahia, Papa Léguas, and Marcos Medrado, and toured locally and internationally as vocalist and percussionist with the folkloric troupe, Exaltação á Bahia. In 1991, Mendonça was featured in Paul Simon’s documentary music video, “Born at the Right Time.”

Eduardo Mendonça has also performed for the 14th Dalai Lama, Jorge Ben Jor, Roberto Menescal and Alcione.

Mendonça’s quartet performance will bring to the audience Bossa-Nova, Brazilian standard tunes, MPB (Brazilian Popular Music) and original tunes.

Bombino is one of the great guitar players and performers in the Sahara and Sahel regions of Africa and he has a cult-like following. He was born in 1980 into a family of nomadic Tuareg herders living in the region of Agadez, Niger, a remote and storied city at the edge of the Sahara. His childhood was spent learning the survival skills necessary to a nomadic lifestyle. In the Tuareg community education is at the center of all activities and the desert is the university. When Bombino was barely 12 years old, his family took refuge in Tamanrasset, Algeria, to escape the hostilities related to the outbreak of the first Tuareg rebellion. In that same year, he picked up his first guitar.

In 1993 his family returned to Niger, where Tuareg guitar was a new phenomenon but forbidden by the authorities.
Despite this ban, Bombino’s uncle encouraged his new interest. Bombino later travelled to Algeria and Libya where he met professional musicians and for the first time heard the music of Ali Farka Toure’, Jimi Hendrix and others. He began learning some blues and rock and started to integrate it with the traditional music he grew up with.
